Glossary

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages

Carbon Footprint

A measure of the amount of carbon dioxide and other carbon compounds emitted due to the consumption of fossil fuels by a particular person, group, etc.

Cobalt

The chemical element of atomic number 27, a hard silvery-white magnetic metal.

Conflict Minerals

(Especially in Africa) a mineral mined in an area of armed conflict and traded illicitly to finance the fighting.

Data Center

A large group of networked computer servers typically used by organizations for the remote storage, processing, or distribution of large amounts of data.

Deep Learning

A function of AI that imitates the human brain by learning from how it structures and processes information to make decisions. Instead of relying on an algorithm that can only perform one specific task, this subset of machine learning can learn from unstructured data without supervision.

Ethics

Moral principles that govern a person's behavior or the conducting of an activity.

Fab

A microchip fabrication plant.

Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)

An electronic circuit that processes images and accelerates the rendering of 3D computer graphics.

Limited Memory

A type of AI system that receives knowledge from real-time events and stores it in the database to make better predictions.

Microchip

A tiny wafer of semiconducting material used to make an integrated circuit.

Pruning

Reduce the extent of (something) by removing superfluous or unwanted parts.

Quantization

The process of mapping a continuous set of values to a smaller, discrete set of values

Tensor Processing Unit (TPU)

A custom-designed application-specific integrated circuit that accelerates machine learning workloads.

Transfer Learning

A machine learning technique that uses knowledge gained from one task to improve a model's performance on a related task.

Zero-emission buildings

Buildings that are highly energy efficient, use clean energy, and do not emit greenhouse gases from energy use.
